The Fourth Gavrilin Governor’s International Competition for Young Musicians

The main goal of the competition is to spot and bring to light gifted musicians from Russian regions, the near abroad and other countries; to support the best traditions of music teaching at secondary music schools, schools of art and colleges; to acquaint the general public with works by Valery Gavrilin, the composer born in Vologda Region.
1. COMPETITION TERMS 1.1 The Fourth Gavrilin Governor’s International Competition for Young Musicians is held in Vologda from April 12 to April 19, 2010 under the patronage of the Governor of Vologda Region V.E. Pozgalev. According to the main goals of the competition students of regional music schools and colleges (with the exception of Moscow and St. Petersburg) can participate in the following nominations: • Piano • Violin • Cello • Solo vocal performance (academic) • Composition 1.2 Young performers – pianists, violinists and cellists of three age groups; singers and composers of two age groups – can take part in the competition. 1.3 For the performers (pianists, violinists, cellists) the following age groups are established: Junior Group – from 9 till 12 years (inclusive); Intermediate Group – from 13 till 16 years (inclusive); Senior Group – from 17 till 20 years (inclusive); 1.4 For composers the following age groups are established: Intermediate Group – from 9 till 15 years (inclusive); Senior Group – from 16 till 20 years (inclusive); 1.5 For singers the following age groups are established: Intermediate Group – from 16 till 19 years (inclusive); Senior Group – from 20 till 24 years (inclusive); The age of the participants is defined on the 12th of April, 2010. The application forms for participation in the competition should be submitted till December 31, 2009 to the address: 105, Gorky Street, 160014, Vologda, Russia; Vologda Regional Music College, for Executive Director of the Fourth Gavrilin Governor’s International Competition Lev Isaevich Trainin by a registered letter with obligatory receipt notification. The postmark determines the mailing date. 1.1 In addition to the application form it is necessary to enclose the following documents: • The certificate of birth (copy); • The curriculum vitae; • Two black-and-white photos to the waist (9x14 cm.) of good quality (signed on the back); • The videocassette or DVD with the recording of two musical pieces: a) for pianists: a movement of a classical sonata (or a polyphonic piece) and an etude; b) for violinists and cellists: a movement of a sonata (or a polyphonic piece) and a virtuoso work; c) for vocalists: two diverse works of Russian and European composers; d) for composers: (s. COMPOSERS Round I) On the videocassette or DVD it is necessary to specify the performed pieces and the performer’s name; the cassette should be signed by the performer. The videocassettes and DVDs are not returned. 1.2 Every participant of the competition will be informed by the Organizing Committee on the date of arrival in Vologda till February 1, 2010. 1.3 The application deposit is paid after the arrival on the competition by checking in. The contestants pay 1000 roubles. In case of double participation every nomination should be paid separately. In case of participation refusal the documents and the application deposit are not returned.
2. COMPETITION ORDER 2.1 The competitive auditions will be carried out in public and consist of 2 rounds. The pieces from the competitive program are to be performed by heart. 2.2 The sequence of performances during the competition is determined by a toss-up and is kept up to the end of the competition. 2.3 One acoustic rehearsal is given to each contestant. 2.4 The performers should arrive at the competition with their personal accompanists. 2.5 The Organizing Committee invites leading musicians and composers of Russia and abroad to work in the jury. The jury has right: - to award not all the grants and diplomas; - to divide one grant between several contestants; - to award diplomas for the best performance of various pieces; - to award the best teachers with diplomas; - to award the best accompanists with diplomas; - to redistribute grants and prizes within the prize fund in case of some grants and prizes are not awarded. 2.6 The state, public organizations, and also sponsors can institute special prizes for the participants of the competition, which are awarded by the jury. 2.7 The decisions of the jury are final and are not discussed and revised. 2.8 All the participants who have taken prize-winning places receive a rank “The Laureate of the Competition” or the “The Diplomant of the Competition”. 2.9 The winners and diplomants of the competition are obliged to take part in all concerts arranged by the Committee during the days of the competition free of charge. 2.10 In case of disagreements by interpretation of the present terms of the competition the only valid variant is the Russian one.
3 FINANCIAL TERMS OF THE COMPETITION 3.1 All expenditures connected with the competitors’ staying in Vologda (return ticket, hotel accommodation, meals) are paid by organizations that send their performers, or contestants themselves. 3.2 The foreign participants themselves are responsible for obtaining passports and visas. The participants should apply to a Russian consulate after receiving the formal invitation to the Competition. 3.3 The Organizing Committee will provide assistance in booking the hotel accommodation of the participants according to the advance applications, which are to be submitted after the reception of the invitation, but not later than one month before the beginning of the competition.
4 THE PRIZE FUND 4.1 The prize fund is divided into each category (pianists, violinists, cellists, singers, composers) and age group (junior, intermediate, senior). The prize fund includes grants for participants and prizes for teachers and best accompanists. 4.2 All grants and ranks “The Laureate of the IV Gavrilin Governor’s International Competition for Young Musicians” are awarded in each separate nomination: pianists, violinists, cellists, singers, composers. The following grants and awards will be announced: Junior group: FIRST grant – 17,000 roubles SECOND grant – 12,500 roubles THIRD grant – 7,000 roubles Intermediate group: FIRST grant – 24,000 roubles SECOND grant – 17,000 roubles THIRD grant – 12,000 roubles Senior group: FIRST grant – 34,000 roubles SECOND grant – 27,000 roubles THIRD grant – 21,000 roubles
There is a special fund for “Diplomants” in every group for every nomination.
The Governor’s Special Prize for the best performance of a musical piece by Valery Gavrilin.
4.3 Separate prizes are awarded to the teachers of the contestants, which have taken prize-winning places (in all nominations): 1st place – 11,000 roubles 2nd place – 9,000 roubles 3rd place – 7,000 rouble
4.4 With the prize of 7,000 roubles 5 best accompanists are awarded. 4.5 The prizes and grants are paid in roubles according to the exchange rate of the Central Bank of Russia on the date of payment.
5 THE PLACE OF THE COMPETITION 5.1 The basic place for rehearsals and the competition are the rooms and the concert hall of the Vologda Regional Music College (105, Gorky Street, Vologda) and the concert hall of the Vologda State Regional Philharmonic Society (21, Lermontov Street, Vologda). 5.2 The Organizing Committee, as agreed with the interested organizations, has the right to use other rooms for performances and rehearsals. 5.3 Contact information: Tel. PIANO Junior Group Round I
1. J.S. Bach Two or Three Part Invention. 2. Sonata or sonatina (Cimarosa, Kuhlau, Clementi, Scarlatti, Haydn); Sonata Allegro is performed in a Sonata of more then one movement. 3. An Etude by Czerny, Lemoine, Loeschhorn, Cramer, Clementi, Moshkovsky, Arensky, Mendelssohn, Liszt (including Etudes Op.1).
Round II (Time limit – 10 minutes)
1. A composition by a Romantic composer. 2. A work by V. Gavrilin* (Only one piece must be performed, with the exception of the “Three Dances” which can be performed as a set).
PIANO Intermediate and Senior Groups Round I
1. J.S. Bach Prelude and Fugue from “Well Tempered Clavier”; 2. Classical sonata (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven) – Sonata Allegro or the finale. 3. A virtuoso study by Moshkovsky, Mendelssohn, Clementi, Liszt, Chopin, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin (an Etude by Czerny, op.299, op.740 – only for Intermediate Group).
Round II (Time limit for Intermediate Group – 17 minutes, Time limit for Senior Group – 20 minutes)
1. A composition of Romantic period (more than 5 minutes). 2. A work of a composer of the XX. Century. 3. A work by V. Gavrilin*.

VIOLIN Junior Group Round I
1. Etude for the violin (solo). 2. Fantasy by Teleman or two movements from a Baroque sonata. 3. A virtuoso work.
Round II
1. A Concerto - first or second and third movements. 2. V. Gavrilin Largo.
VIOLIN Intermediate Group Round I
1. An Etude for the violin (solo). 2. Two movements from Partita or Sonata for the violin solo by Bach, or two movements from a Baroque sonata. 3. A virtuoso work.
Round II
1. A Concerto - first or second and third movements. 2. V. Gavrilin Moderato*.
VIOLIN Senior Group Round I
1. An Etude or a Caprice for the violin (solo). 2. J.S. Bach Two movements from Partita or Sonata for the violin. 3. A virtuoso work.
Round II

Round II
1. A song by V. Gavrilin. 2. One aria of a West-European composer. 3. A romance of a Russian composer.
SOLO VOCAL PERFORMANCE (academic) Senior Group Round I
1. One aria of a West-European composer of XVI-XVIII centuries. 2. A folk song.
Round II
1. One aria of a Russian composer. 2. A romance or a song of a Russian composer. 3. A song by V. Gavrilin.
COMPOSERS Intermediate Group Round I
This Round will proceed without the presence of the contestants, who will have sent in audiocassettes with recordings of three pieces: a composition for the piano, a composition for the voice or a solo instrument accompanied by the piano, and a piece of the contestant’s choice, with duration of no more than 25 minutes. The music of the performed compositions should be enclosed. The music and the cassettes should be only signed with a motto. The envelope with the application and necessary documents is also to be enclosed and the motto should be also mentioned in the application. The materials are not returned.
Round II
The invitations to the final Round II will be sent after the results of Round I come out. The Second Round will be carried out as a concert. It is advisable that contestants take part in the performance for their own compositions or bring performers with them. During the competition its participants can be offered some creative tasks, which results will influence the distribution of places.
COMPOSERS Senior Group Round I
This Round will proceed without the presence of the contestants, who will have sent in audiocassettes with recordings of three pieces: a composition for the piano, a composition for the voice or a solo instrument accompanied by the piano, and a piece of the contestant’s choice, with duration of no more than 35 minutes. The music of the performed compositions should be enclosed. The music and the cassettes should be only signed with a motto. The envelope with the application and necessary documents is also to be enclosed and the motto should be also mentioned in the application. The materials are not returned.
Round II
The invitations to the final Round II will be sent after the results of Round I come out. The Second Round will be carried out as a concert. It is advisable that contestants take part in the performance for their own compositions or bring performers with them. During the competition its participants can be offered some creative tasks, which results will influence the distribution of places.
